As a child, my drawers were filled with poems that “weren’t very good,” padlocked diaries of “unrealistic dreams,” and crumpled up song lyrics that I would cringe to expose to curious eyes.
But it was only a matter of time before words broke out of the closet to chase me.
One day in the university library, a book flew off a dusty shelf into the aisle in front of me. A collection of fairy tales, unlike the ones I’d inherited from Disney.
Gut-wrenchingly real stories exposed the ugliest fears, deepest longings, and muddiest moments of women’s lives, disguised as fantasy.
I was enchanted.
Immediately signing up for a class on storytelling, myth, and magic, I devoured accounts of women who shape-shifted and beguiled, fought for their freedom and fled the kingdom.
While I had no experience of these days of taverns and nursemaids, I somehow found meaning and relevance in every tale.
I had discovered — no, remembered — the power of story.
Stories are unique in offering us a translucent experience. We don’t only see the story, we see ourselves through it.
The tender truth of the human heart, it turns out, is both deeply personal and surprisingly universal.
As we weave our individual narratives into the collective web of stories, we are invited once again back into the interconnectedness of all life.
